Pun Ngai conducted her ethnographic fieldwork (1995-1996) for Made in China: Women Factory Workers in a Global Workplace in the Special Economics Zone (SEZ) of Shenzhen. As part of her research, she worked with rural migrant women, dagongmei in the pseudonymous “Meteor Electronic Factory.” Together with labor organizers, feminists, university professors, researchers, social workers, cultural activists, workers and students, Pun Ngai has been involved in organizing the Chinese Working Women Network. The goal of this NGO, founded in 1996, is to facilitate ways for migrant women workers to fight for alternative and sustainable development in China.
